A.J. Pierzynski Close To Signing With Toronto Blue Jays

According to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, the Toronto Blue Jays are close to signing free agent A.J. Pierzynski.

Pierzynski had a decent season last year, but saw significant drops in most offensive categories. He is still very durable, having caught at least 128 games every season since 2001.

The Blue Jays already have two catchers under contract, Jose Molina and J.P. Arencibia, but apparently want another catcher. My guess would be that if Arencibia isn’t ready for the majors or has a bad spring then Pierzynski would fit in as either starter or backup.

This potential deal could be a huge blow to the White Sox because they had interest in bringing Pierzynski back. If this goes through, it forces the White Sox to either sign a veteran free agent catcher or thrust Tyler Flowers into a role he might not be ready for.
