Should the White Sox acquire a catcher this offseason?

While Tyler Flowers is not an elite catcher, here is my big concern with the Chicago White Sox using their resources to acquire a catcher is this: If they don’t improve several other positions that are of greater need, it really doesn’t matter that Flowers is behind the plate in 2015.

Is Flowers an All-Star? No, but he is average, which could be good enough where the Sox can win.

The big problem the White Sox need to fix is pitching. If that doesn’t get addressed, catcher becomes irrelevant.

Defense is another need, which is something that Flowers is not terrible at. I understand that Flowers will never be a contact hitter with a .300 average … however, he has some pop in his bat.

The name Jay Bruce has come up in some rumors, who is one of the best defensive outfielders in the National League. While he would be a good fit, the big question is what would it take to get him?

If the Sox were to look at acquiring a catcher, I might look at San Diego’s Yasmani Grandal. He was once a top prospect, but he has struggled in the majors.

Could the Sox turn him around?

With a talent such as Grandal, it is most likely between the ears. Whether the White Sox would be able to turn him around or not would be a totally different story. I say Grandal just because I think the price tag on Grandal won’t be as high as the one on Houston’s Jason Castro. Castro is also a talented young catcher, but he has had more success at the MLB level.
