Looking back on the schedule, it’s not unprecedented for the White Sox to score five runs in a baseball game. They just did it on Sunday! They even scored six runs in a game last Tuesday (they lost both these games). It’s the two runs in 21 innings that followed that day that inspired me to react to routine singles with faux-delight all night.

After the Matt Harvery poleaxing, the pacing shift of Alejandro De Aza ripping a 2-2 fastball out to right field to lead off the game was not advisable viewing for fans who suffer from heart complications. Yet the event that ripped the game open for the White Sox for their 6-3 win in New York was even more improbable.

The White Sox as a team had a .276 OBP entering Wednesday night. From a macro level, that puts the chances of four-straight hitters reaching at 0.6% And yet, the re-jiggered top of the batting order of De Aza, Alexei Ramirez, Alex Rios and CLEANUP HITTER Conor Gillaspie all reached consecutively, punctuated by Gillaspie poking a bloop double past Mets second basemen Daniel Murphy, who decided to kick the ball away a little bit so that Alex Rios could score as well, capping a three-run inning.

This game was flying success if for no other reason than I got through 200 words of a recap without a mention of Jake Peavy’s back or Jake Peavy’s back going out again or Jake Peavy’s back being nabbed by a osprey and flown off with. He’s over 30 and it could easily tighten up on him after the fact, but for the night, Peavy worked his way through 6.2 innings, allowing his customary single home run and actually damaging his strikeout-to-walk ratio with a 6-to-2 performance.

Drama didn’t enter into the affair at the best possible time–the bullpen had a shaky night during a game where they actually had plenty of margin off error to do so. Matt Thornton couldn’t retire anyone to start the eighth and wasn’t helped by an Alex Rios error on the carom that allowed Ruben Tejada to score. Jesse Crain stepped in and struck out the side but made sure to walk David Wright in the middle to allow the tying run to come to the plate before he did.

Addison Reed achieved the same feat in the ninth, though a massive Alex Rios bomb in the top of the inning prevented Reed’s foibles from coming in a save situation. The tying run came up to the plate, but the tying run was a recent call-up whose stat line included “.200 OBP.”

It was a good night for lineups flipped on their heads in an effort to kickstart the offense. The top four of De Aza, Ramirez, Rios and Gillaspie went 9-19 with two home runs and two doubles, while scoring all six runs. That’s some work.

Team Record: 14-18

Chicken or the egg? Single sniper or extra guy on the grassy knoll? Was Matt Harvey super dominant or was the White Sox offense genuinely terrible? Is “both” a reasonable answer to all of these? These are the questions that will haunt historians, biologists, biomechanic (ologists?) and your most talkative co-worker until the end of days. I really cannot see an alternative scenario in this regard.

UNLESS–with the option to operate in a “controlled sample” as they say, the White Sox pulverize run-of-the-mill Mets right-hander Jeremy Hefner, thus proving indisputably that Tuesday night’s horrific struggles were solely and entirely the product of Mr. Harvey’s virtuosity.

Hefner has a 4.34 ERA but his peripherals suggests a much worse fate awaits him. He’s been sieged with seven home runs in just 29 innings of work. I thought the guys from Rising Apple were just naive in their complaints on Citi Field’s new, less spacious dimensions, but Hefner has been proving them right; throwing dingers and generally doing little to offset a strikeout rate that isn’t too impressive in today’s whiff-crazy baseball world.

Data such as “The White Sox are still the worst offense in the league across a number of statistical measures” and “CBS’ Danny Knobler has found more scouts saying the Sox look terrible” will not be considered. Just beat the rebuilding Mets and Hefner and the White Sox offense is redeemed. That’s how this works.

1. Alejandro De Aza – LF
2. Alexei Ramirez – SS
3. Alex Rios – RF
4. Conor Gillaspie – 3B
5. Paul Konerko – 1B
6. Dewayne Wise – CF
7. Tyler Greene – 2B
8. Tyler Flowers – C
9. Jake Peavy – P

Oh, look, Paul Konerko sandwiched by Conor Gillaspie–cleanup hitter!–and Dewayne Wise. Moments like this he’s got to be wondering where a pen is at so he can sign his four-year extension, already. It’s preferable to think of this lineup as a getaway day concoction rather than a panicky shuffling of deck chairs/yanking the tablecloth out from under the dishes. That’s probably what it is anyway.

1. Jordany Valdespin – CF
2. Daniel Murphy – 2B
3. David Wright – 3B
4. Lucas Duda – LF
5. John Buck – C
6. Mike Baxter – RF
7. Ike Davis – 1B
8. Ruben Tejada – SS
9. Jeremy Hefner – P

Jake Peavy is making his first start after missing two turns in the rotation due to back pain and tightness. He’ll set out to prove that skipping the disabled list was worth it and hopefully he’s right. There’s some sort of old phrase that relates to a potential Jake Peavy injury and the White Sox playoff hopes, something something “straw” and something about backs and camels.

Three-game winning streaks seem pretty darn easy in retrospect.

All it takes is quality starts–one of the few things this White Sox roster can seem to produce on demand–and the ability to hit home runs out of U.S. Cellular Field; a feat accomplished by Tyler “Released by the Astros this season” Greene, Hector “30 year-old rookie” Giminez, Conor “Traded so he wouldn’t get DFA’d” Gillaspie and Adam “In the doldrums” Dunn in the past two days.

With Jeff Keppinger still out with ‘White Sox third basemen back disease,” the White Sox are hopeful that the practice of getting power-hitting from reserve infielders who weren’t on the roster at the start of March will continue.

Just look! There’s Tyler Greene at the top of the lineup tasked with providing support to Alejandro De Aza’s 28.6% strikeout rate.

Look! There’s Conor Gillaspie starting against a left-handed pitcher (although moved down a slot).

Not that these are unreasonable decisions by any means. The lineup could hardly afford to lose Gillaspie at this point, Tyler Greene deserves a statue for only striking out once in 12 plate appearances, and if anything, it took stones and patience for Robin to slide his full-time catcher back in the lineup, since he hasn’t gotten on base this week.

April is a confusing time. At least there’s always Alex Rios

White Sox Probables

Alejandro De Aza, CF

Tyler Greene, 2B

Alex Rios, RF

Adam Dunn, DH

Paul Konerko, 1B

Alexei Ramirez, SS

Conor Gillaspie, 3B

Tyler Flowers, C

Jordan Danks, CF

Gavin Floyd, SP

The bottom-half of the Rays batting order remains more or less clownshoes, but James Loney has been John Olerud so far this year and is 4-5 for the series and doubled twice off Jake Peavy last night. Joe Maddon’s attempt to re-jigger platoon-bat Matt Joyce by putting him at the top of the lineup last night produced a solo home run and Desmond Jennings’ return to the top of the order to end Maddon’s two-game spree of tossing middle infielders into the outfield.

No one knows where Matt Moore nor Gavin Floyd are throwing the ball so far this season. Both are striking over a batter an inning while walking well over 10% of the hitters they have faced. Moore has the advantage of an ERA slightly over 1.00 and not being saddled with a lengthy reputation of being perfectly capable of generating results unworthy of his talents and peripherals. Floyd’s last start was quality and B.J. Upton isn’t around to give him flashbacks.
