The Chicago White Sox have a lot of problems and not much accountability. They are off to one of the worst starts in franchise history and they aren't even trying to be bad on purpose. They are just bad by accident which makes it so incredibly frustrating.
When stuff like this happens, we always just think about who is to blame. There are a lot of people to blame but that isn't going to help them start winning.
Right now, they need to start making some moves that will help them get back to where they need to be. That could start with cutting some of the players that they don't need to have on the roster anymore. They can start with these three players:
1. Aaron Bummer
Aaron Bummer needs to be off the Chicago White Sox sooner than later.
Aaron Bummer was an outstanding reliever at one point which is why he has the contract that he currently does. His stuff used to be as nasty as it can be which allowed him to be one of the best in the game.
Now, he just doesn't seem to have it anymore. Maybe it is because the White Sox misuse him but the reality of the situation is that he just doesn't help them win.
If they can't get a team to make a trade for him, they should honestly just cut him now. That would be good for him as he could start over somewhere fresh and it would be good for the White Sox as they can start trying new things. It is sad that this is where he is but it's the truth.
2. Jake Diekman
There is no reason to keep Jake Diekman on the Chicago White Sox.
The big trade deadline acquisition for the Chicago White Sox in 2022 was Jake Diekman. They traded Reese McGuire to the Boston Red Sox in order to get Diekman.
McGuire was terrible for the White Sox too so it didn't matter but he started to heat up once he ended up in Boston. It made it feel like the White Sox are actually cursed because Diekman starter to play horribly.
Diekman has been nothing short of a disaster in a White Sox uniform which is why they need to just let him go. There is no reason for him to throw another pitch for them at this point.
If they were to let go of Bummer and Diekman, they'd be in a hole with relievers but it would be more fun to see them try to develop younger players than just trotting out the same bad players every day. Obviously, this recipe isn't cooking anything good.
3. Mike Clevinger
Mike Clevinger shouldn't be with the Chicago White Sox anymore.
For one, Mike Clevinger is a very questionable human being. He was investigated by Major League Baseball all off-season which should have been enough of a red flag all along.
Outside of that, he just isn't a good pitcher at all either. He had a few starts early that made it seem like he was coming back to pitching well but now we know that the advanced stats that suggested a regression is coming were correct.
He has been terrible over the last couple of starts and it is so clear that having him on this team is a negative in every way. These starts could be going to someone else in AAA that deserves a chance a lot more than he does.
They should have cut him before he ever threw a pitch for the team but now that he is clearly bad is even more of a reason to consider it. Hopefully, the team starts to make some good decisions soon.
