Brock Holt should get a call from Chicago White Sox management
The Chicago White Sox should think about adding Brock Holt to the mix during free agency this winter as the Boston Red Sox might be forced to let him go.
The Chicago White Sox are in need of a little bit of depth to complement the core they are building through prospects and the draft. They have their core made up of Yoan Moncada, Eloy Jimenez, Tim Anderson, Nick Madrigal, Michael Kopech, Lucas Giolito, and Luis Robert amongst others but they are going to need some help. The Boston Red Sox and the White Sox are connected in a lot of ways but adding Brock Holt in free agency would be a really smart move.
Holt has been a member of the Boston Red Sox from 2013-2019 and his time there might be up. They won the World Series in 2018 but 2019 was a terrible year for them as the defending champions. They have some decisions to make with other players like Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez so someone like Brock Holt might be forced out by default if they decide to pay those guys instead. They also might see them both leave leading to a rebuild all around making Holt someone they don’t really need.
He would fit in on the White Sox because they need depth in the lineup behind some of the previously mentioned players. He would be an upgrade over almost every depth player that was used in 2019 as they hope to be a much better team in 2020. Holt has played every single position besides pitcher and catcher for the Boston Red Sox. That means the White Sox could pluck him wherever they need him on any given night if he were a member of their team.
There is also the likelihood that someone like Nick Madrigal or Luis Robert struggle a little to begin their career and needs some help and it would be good to have a guy like Brock Holt there to back them up in that situation. No young player goes without a few struggles early on and Holt could be there to help them. He only played in 87 games last season but he had a really good batting average with .297. A guy like him lower in the lineup or as an injury replacement would be really good for the White Sox.
He also has a plethora of playoff experience. He knows what it is like to be a part of heartbreaking playoff defeats and he knows what it is like to be a part of a championship team. If the White Sox were to put together a playoff run next season, they don’t really have anyone important in their lineup that has that level of experience. Most of the team is young and on the rise but even a guy like Jose Abreu has never made it to the playoffs. Holt would be a great addition to what he could bring not only on the field but off the field as well.
