White Sox: Leader in the Zack Wheeler sweepstakes?
The Chicago White Sox need some extra pitching to be added this winter and one of the top free-agent pitchers might be leaning towards them.
The Chicago White Sox need some pitching help. They already have the likes if Reynaldo Lopez, Lucas Giolito, and Dylan Cease healthy and they are hoping that Michael Kopech and Carlos Rodon can come back better than ever from Tommy John‘s surgery. That would give them five pretty good starters but they could definitely use more because of uncertainty and the fact that injuries happen. They are surely going to be looking to add some arms this winter.
Zack Wheeler should be near the top of the list for the White Sox. Obviously, there are a few bigger names out there like Stephen Strasburg, Madison Bumgarner, and Gerrit Cole but Wheeler might be the most realistic option for them. There are reports out there that the Sox are in the leading group of teams that are in on Wheeler. There is no doubt that this would be a very strong move as they look to improve the team.
Wheeler was really good in 2019. He was on a New York Mets team that was up and down all season long but were ultimately on the outside looking in. He went 11-8 and had a 4.1 WAR, 195 strikeouts, 3.96 ERA, and 1.259 WHIP. He would come in and be a solid number two behind Lucas Giolito. Obviously, if the Sox could get Wheeler and one of those other top free-agent pitchers this would become one of the best staffs in the big leagues. That could also allow them to use a couple of the guys they have in the bullpen and potentially trade one or two of them.
Wheeler is a fantastic pitcher and the White Sox would certainly benefit from adding a guy like this on the field and he would also truly help his teammates off the field. He would become one of the eldest players on the team and the pitching staff specifically. He can help the guys he is pitching with learn how to win. A move like this would be a major win for the White Sox all around.
