Chicago White Sox: Three players who deserve ten year deals
The Chicago White Sox have some players who might be good enough to get a ten-year deal f the White Sox ever wanted to give one of those out.
There was some big news in the sports world yesterday. The Kansas City Chiefs gave their superstar starting quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, a ten-year contract extension. You read that right, a professional athlete signed a ten-year contract extension. He also has two years left on his current rookie contract so he is locked in for twelve more years. It makes us wonder, are there any players on the Chicago White Sox that would deserve a contract that big?
No team in baseball is probably keen on giving too many guys contracts like that because they can really hurt you later. If the player gets really hurt or their play starts to fall off, ten years is a very long time in the sports world to have to deal with that contract. Think about what baseball (or any sport) looks like right now and what it looked like back in 2010. Things change from year to year let alone from decade to decade.
The White Sox are a team loaded with young players so maybe if there was a team in baseball that would take a chance on a player with that type of deal, it would be them. There are a few different guys that you could look to in terms of the ones who might be candidates for a contract that long. This is just a fictional list in light of the Mahomes deal but it is still fun to think about. If there were a situation where they did it, it would be one of these three players:
The Chicago White Sox have something so special in Yoan Moncada. The current consensus seems to be that he is the best player in the organization right now and only one other player seems to have a ceiling higher than him. There are also folks who believe (and rightfully so) that he is the best Chicago baseball player in general between both teams. Regardless, he is amazing and will be for a very long time.
It is fair to say that he is going to be good for at the very least ten more years. That is why giving him a ten-year deal is something that would be okay for the White Sox. They already extended him so it isn’t going to be happening any time soon but if they wanted to give him a ten-year extension before they did that, not many people would have really complained.
The White Sox might have regretted the contract in the last two or three years of the deal but when a player is this good, it might be worth it. Either way, Moncada is locked into the White Sox until 2025 at the latest and it could end up going even further than that. Hopefully, he continues to be as good of a baseball player as he was in 2019 and help the White Sox win games.
The Chicago White Sox might not have a player in the organization that is more fun to watch than Eloy Jimenez. He is a joy to have on and off the field for many reasons. His off the field stuff includes funny faces, dancing, funny post-game interviews, and an infectious smile. It makes him very easy to root for when the game is going on and things should be a bit more serious. He makes the game so much more fun.
The White Sox are lucky to have such a vibrant personality on the team as they enter a time that is supposed to be so fun for the organization. Well, as fun as he is, he is even better at baseball. He has incredible power and he might be the best power hitter in the organization. He hit 31 home runs as a rookie and it felt like it was by accident.
He got off to a slow start in his rookie 2019 season but once he got going he really got going. He also had two somewhat lengthy stints on the injured list and still managed to get to 31 home runs. It really makes you wonder what a full year of health combined with more development will give us from Jimenez. That is why a ten-year deal might have been worth it for him early on.
Earlier when it was mentioned that Moncada might be the best player in the organization or Jimenez might have the most power is because one guy might challenge them for those accolades. That would be Luis Robert. He hasn’t played a single Major League Baseball game yet so it is a bit risky to say those things but this is a five-tool player that the White Sox believes is really going to help them along.
He has superstar potential because he can do it all. You can take all the things that Moncada and Jimenez do well and then combine them to recreate Robert. It is incredible to think about the potential of this team if Robert really becomes that good for that long along with the rest of the crew that has been put in place behind him.
If there was ever a guy to give a ten-year contract to, it is the guy who has the combined skills of the two best players in your Major League lineup as he comes into the MLB. This kid gets “a poor man’s Mike Trout” comparisons because of how good he is as a five-tool player. He is going to be so good for so long. It wasn’t a ten-year deal the White Sox gave him but he is locked up long term and it is exciting to see where this can go.
