Former Chicago White Sox employee, Kim Ng, is now an MLB General Manager.

The Major League Baseball world was given some outstanding news on Friday. Kim Ng is going to be the General Manager of the Miami Marlins. She will take over for them starting next season after leaving her now-former position of Vice President of Baseball Operations for Major League Baseball. She got her career started with the Chicago White Sox back in 1990. She held a few positions with them but she was eventually the Assistant Director of Baseball Operations.

All of this started after she graduated from the University of Chicago so there is even more local flair to this story. Ng is now the first woman to hold the position of General Manager for any team in Major League Baseball history. Not only is she the first woman GM in baseball, but she is also the first woman GM in any of the “Big Four Men’s League’s” (MLB, NHL, NFL, NBA). It is awesome to see the Miami Marlins do this and hopefully, they are the first of many.

There are many awesome things on Ng’s resume that helped her get to where she is today. For one, after leaving the Sox, she went to the New York Yankees where she would be part of winning three World Series titles (1998, 1999, 2000) as the Assistant General Manager. She became the youngest person to ever hold that position and only the fourth ever female there.

In 2001, she went to the Los Angeles Dodgers where she would serve as the Vice President and Assistant to the General Manager. In 2005, she didn’t land the vacant GM spot with Los Angeles and wasn’t hired by any of the other teams she interviewed with. She did, however, stick with LA as the Assistant before getting that previously mentioned job with the MLB.

This is such awesome news for fans of baseball. We need everyone who knows a lot about the game to be involved in the game and this is a great hire. The White Sox being such a small part of her career starting up is really cool to reflect on. When the Marlins aren’t playing the White Sox, this will be an easy team to root for with her at the helm. All of this experience that she has acquired over the years will help her on her journey to the top.
