The Chicago White Sox now have a manager who has been on top of baseball.

The Chicago White Sox have hired a manager in Tony La Russa with a lot of credentials that make him special. Some people aren’t a fan of the hire but as we think about it more and more, it seems like something that might not be that bad on the baseball side of things. The story of his recent DUI is awful but the White Sox seem to be waiting to see what happens legally before they do anything about it.

One thing we know for sure is that La Russa left baseball on top. When he managed his last game in 2011, he and his St. Louis Cardinals won game seven to capture the World Series title. Game six and seven of the series were two of the craziest games in the history of Major League Baseball.

The 90-72 Cardinals didn’t have quite as good of a record as the 96-66 Texas Rangers but they were able to defeat them anyway. The craziest part about their game-seven appearance is the fact that being down 3-2 in the series, they needed to win game six in extra innings just to get there. The Rangers were about to win the World Series in game six but the Cardinals tied it in the bottom of the ninth with two outs.

As mentioned before, they won the game in extras to force game seven. It wasn’t that easy, however, as Josh Hamilton hit a two-run blast in the top of the tenth inning to give the Rangers the lead back. In the bottom half of the inning, the Cardinals tied it again before hitting a walk-off home run later in the bottom of the 12th.

It is pretty crazy but the players and coaching staff deserve a lot of credit for buckling down and getting it done when it mattered most. In game seven, the Rangers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but the Cardinals got it tied at the bottom of the inning. They took a 3-2 lead in the third inning and never looked back from there before winning the ball game and the World Series with a final score of 6-2. Once again, under La Russa, they didn’t fold under pressure and got it done.

Like the 2021 White Sox, the 2011 Cardinals were loaded with talent. They also faced adversity which is something that seemingly every World Series champion does. La Russa was able to reel all that talent in and get the most out of them which helped him win that big game seven.

It is crazy that he left baseball after winning such a crazy baseball game for one of his greatest achievements but he did. Now, he is back looking to replicate some of that with this modern-day White Sox team. As mentioned before, this White Sox team has a lot of things that remind people of that 2011 Cardinals team.

The hope is that La Russa is able to help them get back to the World Series. If they are thrust into a game-seven like those Cardinals, we can be confident that he will be able to help them overcome the emotions. There is also a lot of strategies that are needed to win a game like that. La Russa may be on the older side but he hasn’t forgotten the ins and outs of baseball. This game-seven victory is fun to look back on and exciting to think about in terms of how the White Sox may be doing it someday.
