White Sox: Adam Engel makes a great 4th outfielder in 2021
Adam Engel will be a great Chicago White Sox fourth outfielder in 2021.
When you think about the Chicago White Sox going into 2021, you probably think about how Adam Eaton was signed in free agency to join a unit of him, Eloy Jimenez, and Luis Robert. That group, pending a good season from Eaton, should be pretty good. Robert and Jimenez are elite hitters and Eaton used to be a very good hitter before 2020. If he is able to bounce back from a lousy year last year, this is a fun group.
With all of that said, having a good fourth outfielder is very important. One of those guys could have an injury or two throughout a 162 game season and days off will be necessary. That is where Adam Engel will come in. He is going to be one of the team’s depth players and is the definition of a fourth outfielder. He can play all three positions out there and be above average at it.
He is also a pretty good hitter when called upon so that is just an added bonus. There will be plenty of times where Tony La Russa uses Eaton in the starting lineup but the best spot for him is late in games. When the White Sox are up by one or two late in the ballgame, he is the guy to bring in to play some defensive outfield. We all know by now how bad Jimenez is defensively so left field is his most likely destination late in games but you never know.
Engel is a great player and any World Series contender would love to have him on their bench ready to go whenever he is needed. Players like Engel are exactly what you need to take the next step. When he is one of your more productive players you probably aren’t that good of a team but when he is a depth piece you are set. Hopefully, Engel is able to stick around long enough to be a World Series Champion with the Chicago White Sox.
