Chicago White Sox 2021 Season Preview: Zack Collins
The Chicago White Sox are without James McCann now. He signed a big-money contract with the New York Mets this offseason. To be honest, he deserves to be a starter and he deserves every penny. He was a phenomenal catcher for the Chicago White Sox while they were trying to build a good team. He helped so many young guys and he will certainly be missed. Now, they need to figure out who is going to be the backup going forward. It is probably more of an important position than you think.
The reason the White Sox allowed McCann to walk is the fact that they have Yasmani Grandal who is a top-three catcher. Not only is he a top-three catcher, but he can also be a top one catcher in any given year. This was a smart move but the White Sox even though it was nice to have two elite backstops for a year. Now, they might turn to Zack Collins to take McCann’s place as the number two guy.
Collins has been in the White Sox system now for a while. He was thought to potentially be the future catcher and he still might be but it is good to ease him in now. He is looking good so far in spring training with his bat and they need to make sure he does a good job as a defensive catcher as well. This is a player with all of the potential he needs but he just needs to put it all together.
If he can hit and get on base, he should really be able to help the White Sox get done what they want to get done. There is still a long way to go but you have to like where he is at right now. The pressure is off so it will be fun to see how it goes for him.
2021 Expectations:
He can really get some power behind the ball as you can see in the video. There are all of the tools there for him to win the job. There are some other players there that are going to challenge for the backup catcher role so Collins needs to just keep grinding. You can expect him to probably win the job and have a pretty nice year. The White Sox are going to be really good around him so you can expect some of those good vibes to carry into his game.
