The Chicago White Sox lost a tough one with Lucas Giolito on the mound. He certainly had a much better game than his last time out against the Boston Red Sox but he didn’t finish strong in this one. He gave up a home run to Miguel Cabrera in the first inning and then he got on a roll. He was cruising until the seventh inning when he gave up three runs.

It was clear that he should have been taken out after allowing the Tigers to tie it but the decision was made to keep him in. Detroit then managed to put two more up and take a 4-2 lead in the ballgame. Giolito was really good until that last inning of his.

Lucas Giolito’s comments after the Chicago White Sox loss were concerning.

Giolito told the media that he was “out of gas” when he was struggling at the end. That is a problem. Ethan Katz and Tony La Russa are supposed to know the pitchers on the mound better than anyone. It could just be an honest mistake, but that needs to not happen again. La Russa seemed surprised to hear that during his press conference so you would think it will be handled.

Giolito is one of the most important pieces to this team. He needs to be feeling good about himself as much as he possibly can. When he is out of gas, he needs to come out of the game. He was well north of 100 pitches at that time so it was pretty clear that it wasn’t just “one tough inning”. The White Sox snapped a four-game win streak with the loss so it isn’t all bad but they need to fix this.

Some people still have faith that La Russa is a good enough manager for this team to win. Well, he needs to be better with his decision-making in games. That wasn’t the only mistake made but it certainly was the most important. Hopefully, Giolito can take what worked in the first six innings and run with it. They are back for two more with Detroit on Wednesday and Thursday.
