Chicago White Sox: An early preview of the Field of Dreams game

When I first heard about the Chicago White Sox versus the New York Yankee’s game being held at the Field of Dreams, I was pretty excited. The Field of Dream site is just right up the road from where I live and the opportunity to possibly see a Major League Baseball game played in that venue would have been awesome.

The Chicago White Sox are going to play a big game at the Field of Dreams.

The White Sox originally started as the Sioux City Cornhuskers. After being purchased by Charles Commiskey, they moved to St. Paul, Minnesota. That same team moved to the “Windy City” in 1900 and took the name the White Stockings. They changed their name to the White Sox in 1904.

The New York Yankees, originally known as the Baltimore Orioles, got their start in 1901. They moved to New York a few years later where they became known as the Highlanders and then the Americans at one point. It was in the year 1913 that they became the New York Yankees.

The game signifies the tradition of baseball and celebrates two of the “founding” franchises. It is meant to be a trip back in time to when these two teams were on top of baseball helping to make it great. Yet, another reason this game is so important is that it helps increase the legend that is the popular film Field of Dreams, which was based on a book called Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella.

We all know about the movie and what it entails. It provides a great message and is one of America’s favorite baseball movies. However, what does the movie have to do with the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees?

The book, Shoeless Joe, is about the famous long-gone Chicago White Sox player Shoeless Joe Jackson. Fans of the White Sox will remember that Jackson was one of the best hitters in the major leagues in his time. However, he was implicated in the famous Black Sox Scandal where several White Sox players were found to have “thrown” the 1919 World Series giving in to bettors who had promised them a lot of cash.

Jackson, along with the others that had participated in the betting scheme, were banned from baseball for life. His more than solid batting average would be stricken from the record books and he would never again be able to play the game he loved so much.

In the movie, Jackson appears as a ghost to the man that built the Field of Dreams and he gets to play his game of baseball, the game he enjoys. It’s a touching reminder of the game that we love so much and those that have gone before us to make the game what it is today.

There is much more to the game at the Field of Dreams this August than just a game between the White Sox and Yankees. There is also baseball history, nostalgia, and a chance to see a game in one of the most iconic places in America. Let’s look forward to a great game, a little history, and a White Sox victory!
