It is hard to think of a team in the history of Major League Baseball that has sustained as many injuries to consequential people like the 2021 Chicago White Sox. Everyone knows about Eloy Jimenez, Luis Robert, and Nick Madrigal as far as long-term injuries. They have also had other players hit the 10-day IL like Michael Kopech, Tim Anderson, Adam Engel, Adam Eaton, Lance Lynn, and Billy Hamilton. Now, Yasmani Grandal is the latest to join that list.

The Chicago White Sox are going to miss Yasmani Grandal very badly while he is out.

He is somewhere in the middle of long term and short term as the White Sox announced that he will be out for 4-6 weeks with a torn tendon in his left knee. This is horrible news but it isn’t the worst possible news. He is hitting the 10-day IL but it is much better than being out for the rest of the season which is always feared with an injury like that.

Grandal was just starting to heat up for the Chicago White Sox. You can argue that he was a snub from the MLB All-Star Game as he is one of the best catchers in the American League. The White Sox are sure going to miss his run-producing ability along with his amazing ability to reach base. It is impossible to replace him in the lineup with someone equal but they are once again going to have the “next man up” mentality.

Zack Collins is going to move up to be the starting catcher for now. He has had steady playing time this season so it isn’t going to be that much of an adjustment for him right now. We can only hope that he starts to improve more as he gets even more playing time.

The White Sox have called up Sevy Zavala to be the new backup catcher on the roster. He is in Minneapolis as he has been recalled from AAA Charlotte. It has been a while since he played so now is his chance to prove he can be a helpful player. There is no James McCann around to save the day anymore.

This is truly like nothing we have ever seen before in terms of injuries. This team is so talented but it is becoming harder to win because of the great players that are missing from the lineup. They are going to try and tread water (even more) now that Grandal is out so that they can hopefully still be right there when he comes back. This team has the chance to be dangerous once they are all healthy because now they will be even more motivated.
