The Chicago White Sox lost the first game of Monday’s doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins. Lance Lynn was filthy but a late-inning solo shot by Nelson Cruz allowed the Twins to get it to extra innings tied at one. The White Sox were unable to win after that so the second game was super important. They started Reynaldo Lopez in the game so most expected it to be a little shaky.

It was just that for most of the game. The pitching ended up not being all that bad as they only allowed three runs but the bats were very quiet. Jose Berrios was very good for the Twins all game long. As a result, the seven-inning doubleheader was looking dim going into the final inning. They managed to get runners on second and third with no outs in the bottom of the seventh which made things feel better.

Gavin Sheets came to the plate looking for anything to get the game tied. A sac fly would tie it and a base hit would likely win it. Instead, he hit it a long way for his first career walk-off home run. The White Sox were saved by the rookie.

It was a glorious moment for Sheets in his young career. He earned his call-up because he was so good in AAA and now he is playing very well at the Major League level. The depth in the White Sox organization has really helped them in a year where injuries have been an issue.

The Chicago White Sox continues to get good news as time goes on this season.

Right before the game, the White Sox announced that Luis Robert was going to begin his rehab assignment in Winston Salem. That was as good of news as the organization could get. He will follow in Eloy Jimenez’s footsteps as both should be back within a month. The fact that a stud like Sheets was able to prove himself in the meantime will improve this team’s chances of making a deep run.

It would have been tough to lose both games after such a big weekend where they won a series against the Houston Astros. It was tough to lose the first game with Lance Lynn pitching that well but it happens. The Cleveland Indians lost their game so there was more ground made in the American League Central. The White Sox will now try and win the series with two more games against the Twins today and tomorrow. This was a huge moment for Sheets as he continues to make a name for himself.
