3 crazy Chicago White Sox trade packages for Matt Chapman
The Chicago White Sox are a team that desperately needs to current Major League Baseball lockout to end. They are an elite squad that believes they are in the middle of a World Series winner. In 2021, they won 93 games which were magnificent to watch but everyone wants more.
The only way that they can get more is if they start to win in the postseason. That is only going to happen if they fill in some of the holes that they currently have. Everyone knows that they need a second baseman, an outfielder, and some more pitchers. Every team needs pitchers so the former two are a bit more pressing.
They have some platoon options for right field in Adam Engel, Gavin Sheets, Andrew Vaughn, and Leury Garcia. Garcia can also play second base if need be but he is an ideal 26th man on a roster. Because of this, figuring out second base is key.
One unique way to address the situation is by trading for a great third baseman and moving Yoan Moncada back to second base where he originally started his Major League career. If Yoan was able to continue playing at a very good level at second, it is worth considering.
The Chicago White Sox could really use an elite player like Matt Chapman.
MLB Insider Bruce LeVine went on “Inside The Clubhouse” and named the White Sox as an option for Matt Chapman of the Oakland Athletics. The A’s are probably going to sell off a lot of key pieces in an attempt to rebuild so the White Sox should absolutely make the call. If these two were to make a trade involving Chapman, it might look something like this:
The Oakland A’s might want a lot from the Chicago White Sox for Matt Chapman.
The Chicago White Sox has a lot of great young players. Their farm system is one of the worst because a lot of the prospects have graduated to the MLB but that is actually a good sign that they have young talent that has done a good job developing.
If they want Matt Chapman, they might need to give up a lot. Trading Gavin Sheets, Jake Burger, and Sean Burke would absolutely be the definition of giving up a lot. It is something to consider because Chapman would bring even higher hopes to this team.
Sheets hit the ground running when he came up to the MLB in 2021. He mashed in AAA before his well-deserved call-up. When he reached the show, he was incredibly powerful from the left side of the plate. Any young rebuilding team would love to add him to the middle of their order.
Burger and Sheets are very similar. The only difference is that there was enough room for Sheets in 2021. Burger dealt with a lot of injuries that he had to overcome early on and has become a tremendous story in the MLB. A fresh start on a team like the A’s would do him well.
As for Burke, he is a young pitcher that currently ranks 12th in the White Sox organization. He is a right-handed pitcher that has a projected MLB arrival of 2024. The White Sox are pretty deep with starting pitchers (for now) so moving Burke could be worth it if they needed.
The Chicago White Sox and Oakland A’s could make a one-for-one trade.
The Chicago White Sox may be willing to risk a lot to try and win the World Series within the next few years. Adding Matt Chapman would really help that cause. He is an elite third baseman defensively and he has incredible power. He would be a tremendous addition to this already dangerous lineup.
Giving up Andrew Vaughn would be painful but you need to do stuff like that in order to make winning trades. This would be a winning trade. Vaughn may become a superstar but will he before the White Sox close their window? You just never know.
There is also limited space for Vaughn when the team is healthy. It may be a while before Jose Abreu gives up first base and Eloy Jimenez is pretty set on remaining a defensive left fielder instead of a DH. That leaves very few options for Vaughn.
If he were to go to the A’s, he would probably replace Matt Olson when they decide to move on from him. That could be as soon as this year. He would get plenty of playing time which would be amazing for him on a personal level. It wouldn’t be fun to see in the later years but both teams could certainly get what they need from a one-for-one trade like this.
The Chicago White Sox could send over a mix of prospects and MLB players.
The Chicago White Sox, as of right now, probably have Leury Garcia slated to play second base. However, he is clearly not the desired starter there. He would be best suited, as mentioned before, in the role of utility player that is considered the 26th man on the roster.
It is no disrespect to the longest-tenured player on the squad but the writing is on the wall. If the A’s took him in a trade with three prospects for Matt Chapman, that would be really smart for both sides. During the rebuild for Oakland, they will need position players to eat innings and Garcia can do that.
Wes Kath, Micker Adolfo, and Romy Gonzalez are all prospects that could end up being really good MLB players. Kath has the highest ceiling of them all but we have seen good things from both Adolfo and Gonzalez throughout their careers. Every prospect is worth the risk for a team like the A’s right now so getting as many as they can is the key.
We don’t know for sure if this is how the White Sox will go about things but it is certainly something to think about. If they added a player as good as Matt Chapman for one of their holes in the lineup, they could go from World Series contenders to World Series favorites.
