3 perfect landing spots for Dallas Keuchel in Major League Baseball
The Chicago White Sox finally DFA’s Dallas Keuchel over the weekend. It had been a long time coming after being a bad starting pitcher for over a year. A lot of people were skeptical that the White Sox would actually do it but they did and it is great.
They are going to run the rest of the season with Lucas Giolito, Dylan Cease, Michael Kopech, Lance Lynn, Reynaldo Lopez, Vince Velasquez, and Johnny Cueto as starting options. That is actually a really good group, especially the top four.
Keuchel finishes his 2022 White Sox season with a 2-5 record, a 7.88 ERA, 2.156 WHIP, and only 20 strikeouts in 32 innings pitched. He accumulated a -1.2 WAR which shows just how bad he actually was. Chances are that the White Sox would have a better record if he wasn’t there.
Keuchel has been a very successful Major League Baseball player. In his career, he has been a World Series Champion and a Cy Young Award winner. As a result of his past, he will probably get another chance to pitch in the league. These are three teams that make the most sense for him:
1. Chicago Cubs
The Chicago Cubs would be perfect for a player like Dallas Keuchel right now.
The Chicago Cubs are a very bad team. They just lost both games of a doubleheader to the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday and are now 19-29 on the season. They are 4-6 in their last ten after dropping three straight.
Keuchel would be able to sign there and go to a low-pressure situation. He also wouldn’t have to move his family which would be really nice for him. They are going nowhere this season so he would just be able to try improving his craft without “playoff aspirations”. It is a perfect spot for him.
2. Detroit Tigers
The Detroit Tigers would be a great fit for Dallas Keuchel at this point in time.
The Detroit Tigers are one of Major League Baseball’s most disappointing teams so far this season. They are 18-29 which is good for the second-worst record in the American League. We thought they would take a big step in 2022 and they are going backward.
Part of their problem has been injuries to their starting rotation. Casey Mize, Spencer Turnbull, Matt Manning, and Tyler Alexander are all on the injured list. At this point, they might just want some arms to come in and eat some innings so they can get through what is going to be a nightmare season.
Dallas Keuchel could go there where he wouldn’t have to move too far from Chicago. It isn’t right around the block by any means but there are about 25 MLB teams that are way farther from Chicago than Detroit.
They would also be able to allow him to have a significant amount of playing time. With the way that things are looking for the Tigers right now, he would be going every fifth day. He might not have success getting much better there but at least he would be able to try again.
The nice thing for the White Sox is that they would be seeing a soft-tossing lefty in the division. With the fact that he is struggling combined with the fact that the White Sox own lefties, this would be a dream scenario.
3. Cincinnati Reds
The Cincinnati Reds are one of the best possible destinations for Dallas Keuchel.
The 2022 Cincinnati Reds are one of the worst teams in Major League Baseball. It is honestly a disgusting disgrace to the league because they have made it so obvious that they aren’t trying. They sold off so many pieces during the offseason and let others walk.
Winning is so irrelevant to them right now and it is a shame. They are one of the league’s oldest franchises and one of the most historic. It is so unfortunate to see that they just don’t care. However, they can do some good for Dallas Keuchel.
At 16-31, it might be hard for them to crack 50 wins. However, that isn’t important to them so they might as well let Dallas Keuchel play for them. He and his 7.88 and negative WAR would be perfect for that team. He believes he has earned enough leeway in the game to continue getting chances so maybe the Reds can provide him with that.
Kind of like Detroit, they are somewhat close to Chicago relative to the rest of the league so that is a plus for him right now. He also wouldn’t have any pressure on him anymore as he could just freely pitch on a team that bad. If he is horrid again, no one will care.
We don’t know for sure if Dallas will pitch again this year. It is very possible because he loves it but his next destination is unclear. As shown here, however, it is unlikely that he will pitch for a contender again in 2022. Nobody who has heavy playoff aspirations should want him right now.
