3 Chicago White Sox to trade away right when the season is over
The Chicago White Sox were miserable to watch for most of the 2022 season. It was a massive disappointment after how good they were in 2021 and the expectations that they had coming into the year. Unfortunately, it was all for not.
The White Sox are going to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2018. They will be eliminated from the Wild Card chase this week and the Cleveland Guardians already clinched the American League Central Division.
Who to blame has already been the hot topic all summer. There are folks on the side of the manager and there are some that believe it’s the front office, but the truth is that it is a mix of both of those along with the players.
Chicago had a few guys that did not play well at all this season and should be evaluated with a sense of harshness this off-season. These are the three players that the White Sox should consider trading right when the season ends:
The Chicago White Sox should consider moving on from Yoan Moncada now.
To be honest, it is fair to say that Yoan Moncada is a bust. He was supposed to be the leader of this team for a long time and that just hasn’t happened. He can still become a great player but he is never going t be the best player on the team he is on.
The White Sox should consider moving him during the offseason. There are plenty of teams that would take a risk on his potential. He is an elite defensive third baseman that could get even better if he keeps working at it.
He can’t hit for anything anymore. He used to be so good but 2022 was a major struggle for him. He started the year hurt and never found his form when he returned. At the end of the year, it looked like he didn’t even want to be there. It is time to consider moving on.
The Chicago White Sox should be concerned with Lucas Giolito going forward.
The Chicago White Sox came into this year expecting Lucas Giolito to be their ace. They know that Dylan Cease and Michael Kopech can be elite too and Lance Lynn is a great veteran as well so it had the makings of an amazing staff.
Giolito also had some contract issues in the offseason that suggested that he wants to be a highly paid pitcher in this league. Up until 2022, he certainly deserved it with three straight top-11 Cy Young finishes. This year, however, he has been a disaster by his standards.
Instead of paying Giolito a lot of money and taking the risk that he can get back to form, they should consider trading him for other assets that can make the team as a whole better. He might have a good offseason and get back to the elite player that he was but it is a heavy risk to take.
Giolito has been a great team player but it was obvious that he was the fifth starter on this team in 2022. He got bumped out of the big games down the stretch. He never complained or anything like that because it was so obvious that he didn’t have it this year.
If they trade him they can get something good for him still otherwise they better hope that he can get back to form during the offseason with some mechanical changes. Getting that velocity back on the fastball will be the key. It should be interesting to see how they handle him.
The Chicago White Sox could get a lot in return for Liam Hendriks this year.
Liam Hendriks is one of the few players on the Chicago White Sox that had a great year. He wasn’t called upon to pitch as much as a year ago because there weren’t as many save opportunities. However, when he was called on, he pitched very well. He also dealt with a little bit of an injury this year.
In the first half of the season, he was good enough to be an American League All-Star. It was the second straight time that he went there representing the White Sox. He, regardless of how the season went for his team, should be proud of how good he’s been in this uniform.
Because he is still so dominant, lots of teams would give up a lot to get him. A team like the Los Angeles Dodgers need a closer really bad as Craig Kimbrel isn’t cutting it for them. getting someone like Liam Hendriks would really help them and they would trade a lot more than AJ Pollock.
It is a shame that he might have to end his White Sox tenure like this but it is what it is. The team around him failed to get the most out of him so now it is time to consider moving on from him. Liam is amazing for the community, the clubhouse, and on the field but this team needs to make some changes.
It is unclear if any big moves like this will be made but something needs to change. The way that this season has gone is unacceptable and some of the players need to be held accountable.
