Locked-in Sean Burke quote sets cold-blooded tone for White Sox Game 2 vs. Astros

The White Sox handled the Astros in an exciting Game 1 victory on Tuesday night, and they find themselves now just one win away from their first playoff series win since 2005 with two chances to make it happen. While both teams ran a bullpen game in the series opener, they’ll turn to their top starters in Game 2. For the White Sox, the ball goes to right-hander Sean Burke, who finished off an impressive season with a 3.34 ERA over 172.1 innings. Burke spoke to reporters following Tuesday’s game and was asked if he’s ready for the biggest game of his career

“This is my life,” Burke said. “I don’t have family, no girl, no kids. This is all I do”. 

White Sox twitter was in a frenzy after Burke’s quote, and as the right-hander takes the mound for Game 2, fans will hope he’s as locked in as his quote implies. The Astros will send their ace to the hill to counter Burke, with 2025 Cy Young finalist Hunter Brown set to pitch. An early-season injury got Brown’s 2026 season off to a slow start, and he wasn’t quite as dominant as he was in 2025, but a 3.19 ERA in 20 starts will certainly give the White Sox a challenge. The Sox have seen Brown twice in 2026, and have lost both games. Brown fired seven shutout innings at Rate Field on July 25th, allowing just two hits and striking out seven in a game in which he out-dueled Sean Burke. The White Sox managed two runs and six hits against him over six innings during his September 3rd outing in Houston, but still lost the game handily. I’d expect Brown to be at his best Wednesday night, so the White Sox need Burke to follow suit. 

The White Sox have the advantage, but the Wild Card Series is far from over

Teams that have won Game 1 of the Wild Card series have advanced to the Division Series in 15 out of 16 series so far, the lone exception being the Boston Red Sox last year. The White Sox are in a good position to advance, but the series is far from over. Houston is an experienced Postseason team with a dangerous lineup, and the back end of their bullpen is among the best in baseball. The White Sox need to jump on Brown early and not allow the Astros to carry a lead late into the game. It should be an all-hands-on-deck approach to the bullpen, but a longer outing from Burke would allow them to save some relievers after using several yesterday. 

Sean Burke’s September 8th disaster against Pittsburgh may cause some White Sox fans to be nervous about him taking the hill, but he finished the season with three strong outings. James Fegan of the Sun Times mentioned that Burke had cut out his long-toss routine to save his arm, which led to some unexpected changes in his fastball shape, but has since re-added the long-toss routine and regained his early season form. 

Whether the White Sox can advance to the ALDS on Wednesday or will be forced to play a Game 3 on Thursday could come down to how locked in Sean Burke is. If you ask him, he’s ready to go. Tune in at 4PM Central to find out if he’s right.
