The White Sox season isn’t over just yet. After an impressive win over Houston Tuesday, the White Sox looked to get off to another hot start Wednesday. Behind more early runs and another dominant performance by the bullpen, the Chicago White Sox have defeated the Astros 2-0 in the Wild Card Series and will advance to the ALDS. It’s the first Postseason series win since 2005 for the Southsiders, who have a divisional clash with the Guardians getting underway on Saturday afternoon.

The White Sox bats got off to another red-hot start in Game 2. Sam Antonacci led the game off with a double to left and immediately scored on Kyle Teel’s single. An error on third baseman Nick Allen set the stage for Benintendi, who plated Teel with a single, and an errant throw to the plate allowed a second run to score. Tristan Peters followed with an RBI single of his own, and the White Sox led 4-0 before Houston even got a chance to swing the bats. Astros starter Hunter Brown failed to retire the side in the first inning, and Houston turned to its taxed bullpen to settle things down.

Chase Meidroth's home run completely changed the momentum in Houston

Staked to a 4-0 lead, White Sox starter Sean Burke surrendered a leadoff home run to Jeremy Pena, but otherwise worked a scoreless first inning. The Astros continued to chip away on home runs by Jose Altuve and Cam Smith, pulling to within 4-3 in the fifth inning. With runners at first and second and one out in the fifth, the White Sox turned to starter Anthony Kay, who got Yordan Alvarez and Jose Altuve to fly out and escaped the inning unscathed. It felt like the White Sox needed something to turn the momentum in their favor, and they got it in the sixth. A pair of leadoff walks led the Astros to bring righty Bryan Abreu into the game, and he fell behind Chase Meidroth 3-1 before giving Meidroth a pitch he could handle. Meidroth’s three-run home became the definitive blow to the Astros, as the White Sox bullpen allowed very little traffic down the stretch.

For Meidroth, this moment is the culmination of a breakout season. He’s been one of the best players on the team all season long and it’s awesome to see him rewarded with a big playoff moment.

Next on the docket for the White Sox: a trip to face a familiar foe. Game 1 of the ALDS will take place at Noon Central on Saturday in Cleveland, with Game 2 at 4pm Central Monday. The White Sox have guaranteed themselves at least one home game, with Game 3 happening Wednesday in Chicago. If there’s a Game 4, it would be Thursday at Rate Field, with Game 5 happening next Saturday in Cleveland if necessary. The times past Game 2 have not yet been announced.

Stay tuned for more this week previewing the upcoming series in Cleveland, but with a 7-6 season record against the Guardians, it certainly feels like the White Sox have a chance.
