The never-ending roster shuffle for the White Sox continued earlier this week, as the team added outfielder Tommy Pham in a minor league trade with the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday. Pham's addition came just before the deadline to add players to the roster to be eligible for the Postseason. His addition to the major league roster required a roster move, and the White Sox designated LHP Tyler Gilbert for assignment to make room.
Gilbert, 32, was acquired by the White Sox in another deal with the Phillies prior to the 2025 season, and has been a frequent option in the White Sox bullpen. Gilbert posted a 3.88 ERA in 51 innings in the White Sox bullpen in 2025, though his underlying metrics suggested some luck was involved. It’s been a brutal run for Gilbert so far in 2026. The left-hander made the White Sox Opening Day roster and appeared in one game, allowing two runs in an inning before being sent back down.
Gilbert has returned to the big league mound four times since then, allowing runs in three of the four outings. He’s allowed eight earned runs in just six innings this season in the big leagues, and has a 4.64 in 20 minor league appearances. After being designated for assignment earlier this week, Gilbert cleared waivers and will remain in the White Sox organization, though he is no longer on the 40-man roster.

Despite his recent struggles, Gilbert is perhaps best known for his incredible achievement as a rookie. Gilbert made three relief appearances for the Diamondbacks before throwing a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres in his first career start on August 14th, 2021. He finished that season with a 3.15 ERA in 40 innings, and it’s ended up being the best season of his career so far.

Though Gilbert will remain in the White Sox organization, I’d be surprised if we see him again in 2026. Bringing him back to the big leagues would require a 40-man move, and it seems like the White Sox have other options that will be simpler to add to the roster and can accomplish the same purpose. The White Sox have Sean Newcomb and Bryan Hudson as stable left-handed options in the bullpen, and rookie Hagen Smith has posted some solid innings. In addition, Tyler Schweitzer and Chris Murphy have been more effective at the big league level than Gilbert. White Sox fans may not have seen the last of Tyler Gilbert in general, but they certainly have for the remainder of 2026.
