White Sox top prospect Yoan Moncada leads list of top second base prospects according to mlbpipeline.com.

Chicago White Sox prospect Yoan Moncada was recently ranked as the top second base prospect by mlbpipeline.com. The ranking is Moncada’s second consecutive season leading the prospect group for second baseman.

Moncada was ranked by mlbpipeline as the top second base prospect before the start of the 2016 season. This was while he was a member of the Boston Red Sox. After being acquired via trade by the White Sox as part of a package for Chris Sale, Moncada quickly became the South Siders top prospect.

The White Sox were able to upgrade its farm system by trading Sale to the Red Sox with Moncada as the centerpiece of the trade. With Moncada in the White Sox system, the team has a potential star for the future at second base. However, they don’t have to rush the 21-year-old Cuban to the big leagues yet. With a rebuild underway, Moncada should get more seasoning in the minors before debuting with the White Sox.

If Moncada can have a solid season with either Double A Birmingham Barons or Triple A Charlotte Knights, he could very well find himself with the White Sox during the summer. However, the White Sox should be cautious with promoting Moncada. After a solid season in Double A, Moncada struggled in limited time with the Red Sox last September. In just 19 at-bats, Moncada hit .211 with one RBI.

The White Sox won’t need to rush Moncada, but they will need to continue working with the talented prospect in the minors. Moncada could become a fixture for the White Sox in the future. However, the White Sox haven’t had the best track record in developing hitters in the past. If the White Sox could develop Moncada properly, they could have a future All-Star at second base. Only time will tell.
