White Sox end season with loss; finish 73-89 overall

The 2014 season for the Chicago White Sox came to a close on Sunday afternoon at US Cellular Field, with the White Sox falling to the postseason bound Kansas City Royals, 6-4.

In what was the final game of the career of White Sox captain Paul Konerko, the White Sox were unable to keep a 4-2 lead after five innings, with the Royals having a three-run sixth and one last run in the eighth.

Though Konerko finished 0-for-3 in his final game, it was still one last day to celebrate the career “The Captain.”

As for the White Sox, they scored two runs in both the third and fourth innings.

The game also saw Adam Eaton finish 3-for-3, ending the season with a .300 batting average.

Eaton is one of two White Sox batters this season to have at least a .300 average, with the other being rookie first baseman Jose Abreu finishing the ’14 season at .317. Abreu did not play Sunday in the season finale.

The last time two White Sox batters had a .300- or better average was ’09 when Scott Podsednik batted .304 in 132 games and A.J. Pierzynski batted .300 in 138 games.

On Sunday both teams had 12 hits and no errors.

The loss went to White Sox reliever Daniel Webb, who pitched one inning of relief. He allowed two earned runs on three hits and no walks. Chris Bassitt had a no-decision for Chicago.

Bassitt pitched five innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and one walk. He struck out five in the season finale. He’ll pitch in the Arizona Fall League this October.

Scoring runs for the White Sox were Eaton, Dayan Viciedo and Carlos Sanchez.

The winning pitcher was Casey Coleman, who pitched one inning of relief.

For the season the White Sox finish 73-89 overall, 10 wins better than last season. As for the Royals, they will host the AL Wild Card game against the Oakland Athletics. It will be the first postseason game for the Royals in 29 years.
