White Sox: Arizona Fall League Update October 30
White Sox minor league hitters struggling during AFL play. Pitching prospects faring much better for Sox in AFL.
The Chicago White Sox aren’t getting good results from its hitting prospects during Arizona Fall League play. However, the Sox are getting some good results from its pitching prospects thus far in Arizona.
While the Sox are contemplating what they will do this upcoming offseason, some of its prospects are getting playing time during the AFL season. Top draft pick Zack Collins has played sparingly for the Glendale Desert Dogs, but is struggling at the plate. Through five games, Collins is hitting .167 without any home runs or RBI’s. Collins has also struck out five times, but also has four walks.

Another former top draft pick, Courtney Hawkins is struggling mightily in AFL play. Hawkins, a first round pick in the 2012 draft is hitting .175 with one home and three RBI’s through 10 games. The 23 year-old outfielder has 15 strikeouts to go along with just three walks. This isn’t a good sign for a player that is on the verge of becoming a bust.
Danny Hayes who is coming off a solid season with Triple-A Charlotte Knights is also struggling in AFL play. Through 10 games, Hayes is hitting .176 with one home run and one RBI. Trey Michalczewski isn’t faring any better for the Desert Dogs. Michalczewski is hitting .129 through 10 games with no home runs or RBI’s. The switch-hitting third baseman has 12 strikeouts to go along with four walks.
Although the Sox hitting prospects are struggling, the team’s pitching prospects are performing well in AFL play. Brian Clark has appeared in five games for the Desert Dogs and owns a 2.08 ERA. Clark has pitched 8.2 innings and has given up just two earned runs. He has eight strikeouts and only two walks thus far.

Louie Lechich still hasn’t given up an earned run through 7.1 innings pitched for the Desert Dogs. Opponents are hitting just .130 off the left-handed pitcher. Lechich has recorded four strikeouts and two walks. Nolan Sanburn is also enjoying success for the Desert Dogs. Sanburn is 1-0 in three starts for Glendale with a 2.38 ERA. The 25 year-old right-hander has pitched 11.1 innings and is holding opponents to a .154 batting average.
