White Sox: Grabbing a Marquee Name in 2018 Would Be Huge
The White Sox should have plenty of money to spend in 2018 and need to spend big in free agency. With a surplus of talent available, a marquee signing could propel them to the next level.
The Chicago White Sox aren’t known for spending big in free agency. It seems every offseason we hear they could be in on a big name only to see that player sign elsewhere. On the surface, it could just be because the White Sox have been terrible these past four seasons. Or it could be ownership isn’t willing to spend what it takes to get those guys.
However a marquee free-agent signing could really help this team. And 2018 is the year to splurge because that could be the best free-agent class in recent memory. Bryce Harper, Manny Machado and Josh Donaldson could all be free agents. Also add to the list Clayton Kershaw and Dallas Keuchel. However, with the pitching this team has in the minors, they probably won’t need a pitcher.

Signing a marquee free agent could really help get this team to the next level. It can add a veteran presence and give this team a superstar. Add someone of this nature to a team loaded with talent, and only good things will come. The Cubs have done that the past few seasons with their additions of Jason Heyward and Jon Lester. Pairing superstars with young talent equals success.
Bottom line, ownership needs to be willing to spend big during 2018. If they can grab one of the top free agents, that will be huge for the franchise. This should be right around the time the White Sox are getting ready to really contend. Adding a big name, like Harper or Machado, would reinvigorate the franchise and show fans they have really turned the corner.

One thing we see good teams do is spend money during free agency. It’s important to add those key veteran players that can take your team to the next level. And it’s hard to argue against adding someone from this class. Someone like Machado could play third base for years to come. Or think of Harper patrolling the outfield. While it’s possible the White Sox will simply be outbid, it’s important they establish themselves as key players in free agency. The culture of this organization is changing and should only mean good things in the future.
