Jon Heyman reports the White Sox gave Rick Renteria a three-year contract when they named his manager. Renteria spent 2016 as the team’s bench coach.

The Chicago White Sox never announced the terms of Rick Renteria’s contract when he was named manager after the end of last season. However, Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports the deal is for three years. That gives the new manager job security through 2019. There really is no such thing as security when your a MLB manager but the organization is known for being very loyal.

The contract will pay him a modest salary of $1.1 million this season. Next season he will make $1.2 million and $1.3 million in the final year of his contract. To put that into perspective, Joe Maddon received a five-year $25 million contract to manage the Cubs according to reports. Maddon is definitely more of a proven commodity than Renteria. However, Renteria did have some success in his first stint with the Cubs.

More from White Sox News

The White Sox are off to a great start under their new manager. With a win on Friday over the Detroit Tigers, they sit at 12-9 and currently first in their division. This team is playing good baseball. Renteria really changed the culture and for the good. It’s clear he backs his players and his team wants to play for him.

This team doesn’t really have the makeup of a contender but they’ve done really well thus far. They’re doing enough to win and pitching has been off the charts. I don’t think anyone thought this team would boast one of the lowest ERA’s in baseball. As a team, the ERA is 2.93 and leads MLB. That’s why they’re on a five-game winning streak.

If the team can keep this up there’s no telling where they can go this season. It wouldn’t exactly be a disappointment if they fell off but of course we hope that’s not the case. With the guys they have on this roster, it’s starting to be fun to watch White Sox baseball. And that’s something fans can appreciate.
