KANSAS CITY, MO - AUGUST 11: Carson Fulmer

White Sox tenth ranked prospect finding his groove on the mound after rough start to second stint with team.

In an organization that has an abundance of pitching talent stored within the farm system, competition between the young arms is almost inevitable. With pitchers such as Michael Kopech, Alec Hansen and Dane Dunning generating attention in the minor leagues, the idea of a future starting role with the rebuilding White Sox is beginning to seem over crowded.

After the brief but recent success of Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez at the Major League level, its tough to argue that the 23-year-old Carson Fulmer didn’t have any extra pressure going into his start against the Giants on Sunday afternoon.

Despite competing against one of the worst offenses baseball currently has to offer,  Fulmer was finally able to showcase as to why he was selected eighth overall in the 2015 MLB draft out of Vanderbilt. Fulmer delivered six strong innings with nine strikeouts and only one earned run in his second career start.

Calling Fulmer’s performance dire would be an understatement due to a poor showing out of the bullpen with an era of 8.49 in eight appearances last season, followed by a dreadful starting debut against the Minnesota Twins in which he surrendered six runs and was unable to last through two innings on Aug. 21.

Fulmer’s bounce back start now puts him in the conversation of possibly becoming an everyday pitcher in the rotation for next season, due to the openings derived from the recent release of Derek Holland, and the trade that dealt Miguel Gonzalez to the Rangers.

If theres one certainty created from Fulmer’s performance its that the margin of error for the young right hander becomes smaller each appearance, due to the uncertainty created from his sluggish start to his career. In reality theres only one person that controls the fate of the aspiring major league starter, that being Fulmer himself.
