The MLB released the 2018 Players Weekend jerseys and the White Sox did not disappoint.

While most of the White Sox players had some fun choosing their nicknames for the weekend, a few did not.

Players’ Weekend debuted in 2017. Some fans scoffed at the idea (especially Yankees fans who didn’t like the idea of nicknames on the backs of jerseys), but after all was said and done, it was a success. This season, the weekend takes place August 24-26, according to MLB.com.

Players’ Weekend gives players the opportunity to reflect on why they love the game of baseball. They get to show their personalities. They get to pick the nickname on the backs of their jerseys. And, they get to play around with footwear, accessories, and gear. The overall aesthetic of the weekend is colorful, relaxed, and fun.

As the mother of two teens who both play ball, I love Players’ Weekend. My kids delight in looking up their favorite player’s nicknames and they love seeing the gear they use. They also get to see what players have fun with the weekend and what players do not. Last season, I also let them pick a jersey from a favorite player with a fun nickname. They’ve already picked their jerseys for this season.

Sadly, there are always a few players who use their last names or first names during the weekend, which is nothing short of boring. And, honestly, most of those players seem rather boring during the rest of the season, too.

So, back to the White Sox. Most of the players chose unique nicknames, with the exception of Tyler Danish, who went with Danish. Why couldn’t he go with Pastry? Donut? Even Ty?  Ryan LaMarre is also using his last name. The Sea? Night-marre? Ry? They’ve got to do better.

The White Sox are the only team that has two players with the same nickname. Both Avisail Garcia and Luis Avilan will have “Avi” on the backs of their jerseys. Yes, this nickname is based on their names, but it’s not as boring as Aaron Judge‘s nickname this year: Judge.

You can see all of the White Sox nicknames and all of the other MLB teams at MLB.com. My personal favorite nicknames are (in alphabetical order):

Unfortunately, the White Sox will not be at home during the Players’ Weekend. But, they won’t be too far away. They’ll be playing a four-game series in Detroit between August 23 and 26. Interestingly, the Sox and Tigers played each other during the 2017 Players’ Weekend – but in Chicago.
