Saturday Review: White Sox Aiming Big This Offseason

White Sox have been rumored to be in on many free agents this offseason. The franchise is showing they’re aiming big to improve the team going into 2019.

The White Sox have never signed a player to a contract more than $68 million. This has been stated over and over this week by many writers and fans. Why? Because the White Sox have been rumored to be interested in many top free agents including Bryce Harper and Manny Machado.

With the Sox coming off a 100 loss season, the opportunity to improve the team drastically this offseason has presented itself. The Sox have the payroll flexibility to add a top free agent or two along with other quality veterans. But can the Sox convince someone like Harper or Machado to join a team that not only hasn’t reached the postseason since 2008 but might not be competitive until 2020?

The Sox were able to make a solid video presentation to help recruit highly regarded International free agent Luis Robert back in 2017. Although the 21-year-old didn’t play many games this past season, he’s been stellar so far in the Arizona Fall League. Robert, along with other top prospects in the Sox farm system will look to make an impact in the future in the Majors.

That argument isn’t keeping Sox general manager Rick Hahn from attempting to take advantage of this offseason and targeting top free agents.

Although the Sox haven’t signed a player to a contract worth more than $68 million in their franchise’s history, that’s not stopping the team from targeting players that would command a much higher contract. The players the Sox are reportedly targeting could also fit into the teams’ plans of contending for multiple championships.
