Adam Engel might be one of the biggest difference-makers on the entire White Sox roster in 2021. He was that in 2020 and you can argue that they would have been better had they used him more. Nomar Mazara was the starting right fielder more often than not and Engel was a better player than him in every way.

Engel is a player who is very good with his bat. He might be the most underrated hitter on this team. Everyone looks at him for his defense but he slashed .295/.333/.477 with an OPS of .811. He wasn’t necessarily a run-producing machine but he did only find himself in 36 games out of 60 with 88 at-bats. If they used him more they certainly would have had more production than they got from the people they used instead.

Now, the offense was good but his defense is actually insane. He can make highlight-reel catches regularly along with just the simple routine plays. He made a fantastic play to secure Lucas Giolito’s no-hitter last season which is just one of the many examples of his defending. If they use Engel the right way in 2021, he should be a very good player. There is no reason that Adam Engel should just be guaranteed the spot over him. Each of them should be given plenty of opportunities.
