The Chicago White Sox are off to an up and down start to get the 2021 season underway. It is a very good team but they just need to get on a roll. Their depth is being tested thanks to some key injuries but they are talented enough to get through. With that said, they might be willing to add another bat to their group before the season gets too old. One player that might be in play is Trevor Story of the Colorado Rockies.

Trevor Story would be a great fit with the Chicago White Sox roster right now.

The White Sox have an elite shortstop in Tim Anderson. That doesn’t mean that Trevor Story would be a bad fit just because he is also a shortstop. In fact, he would be a great addition to this team. He could play short and Tim Anderson could move to second base or vice versa but it is never a problem to have too many good bats there.

There is also the designated hitter aspect of it. Trevor Story is an incredible hitter. He has two Silver Slugger Awards in his career along with two appearances in the MLB All-Star Game. His entire career has come playing for the Rockies and he has been good every year. 2020 marked the third straight year where he finished top-12 in MVP voting for the National League. He is clearly looked at as one of the premier players in the league.

Colorado is one of those franchises that is selling off good players for pennies on the dollar. They already traded Nolan Arenado to the St. Louis Cardinals and he is one of the five best players in the league. The White Sox (or any team) might be able to get him for a fair return. These are three trade packages that might get it done:

The Chicago White Sox would look really nice with Trevor Story in their lineup.

In order to get Trevor Story in the White Sox lineup, they would need to trade away some valuable prospects that are highly ranked in their system. Jonathan Stiever and Micker Adolfo are both good prospects but they might find it hard to get a job in the current White Sox system at the MLB level. There is a lot of elite talent at that level that might make it hard to advance.

Stiever has the best chance of the two in becoming an impact MLB player. He is currently the number seven prospect in the White Sox system. He has already made his MLB debut so you know he can get there but there is a lot of work to be done. There is a lot of room for opportunity right now over in Colorado.

Adolfo is listed as the number nine prospect in the White Sox system. He is an outfielder so there might be room for him with the White Sox at the MLB level as long as they are injured but there are some other good ones coming. We know about Eloy Jimenez’s injury but he will be back before the playoffs. Luis Robert is going to be the centerfielder for the next ten years or more and Yoelqui Cespedes is on the way. Adolfo might be better suited for another organization and Colorado makes a lot of sense.

Jake Burger and Jared Kelley going for Trevor Story would make sense for the Chicago White Sox.

The Chicago White Sox has a lot of high-end prospects. Jared Kelley is one of them. He was the White Sox second-round pick (47th) in the 2020 MLB Draft. He is considered one of the best pitching prospects that the White Sox have. If they end up never trading him, they are hopeful that he becomes a very valuable pitcher at the MLB level. He is listed right now as the number four prospect in the White Sox system.

Jake Burger is a former first-round pick of the White Sox. He was the 11th overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft. The White Sox used to have really high hopes for him when he was first drafted but now he is listed as the number 15 prospect in the system. He probably doesn’t have a future as the White Sox third baseman full time as Yoan Moncada is the guy there. First-base is also taken by Jose Abreu and Andrew Vaughn is the guy for the future.

This trade would be an example of trading one high-end prospect and one mid-level prospect for an elite player. It is something that Colorado might consider based on the current state of its organization. The White Sox would be smart to do it because their window is fully open now. Adding someone like Story would help them in their attempt to take advantage.

The Chicago White Sox could give up a mass of players to get Trevor Story.

The Chicago White Sox have a lot of good mid-level prospects to offer teams in trades. The high-end ones are starting to thin out as they reach the MLB level so they might be hesitant to trade any left away. Colorado, however, might be willing to take a load of good but not great prospects in exchange for Trevor Story. It isn’t like the return for Nolan Arenado was much better and he is much better than Story.

Blake Rutherford and Gavin Sheets are the 11th and 12th ranked prospects in the White Sox system so they are just outside the top ten. They will be well into the top ten when Andrew Vaughn, Michael Kopech, Nick Madrigal, and Garrett Crochet come off the list in a few weeks. Giving them up would be tough but getting Story out of it would be well worth it.

Jimmy Lambert and Yolbert Sanchez are good players too but they are absolutely guys you throw in to complete trades like this. Lambert is the number 19 prospect and Sanchez is sitting at 21. They are somewhat of longshots to be MLB guys but they are perfect players to throw in a trade like this.

Hot. Michael Kopech is looking very good so far. light

The White Sox are a great team at the MLB level and they have a decent farm system. Over the next few years, they are going to make trades that get MLB-level players for prospects. That is the idea behind this topic with Trevor Story. If it isn’t him, we hope the White Sox add a bat of some sort throughout the season.
