The White Sox outrighted Dylan Covey to Triple-A Charlotte. Covey had a 7.71 ERA in 18 appearances last season.

The Chicago White Sox outrighted Dylan Covey to Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday. The move opens up a spot on the 40-man roster. It’s not surprising considering the right-hander had a 7.71 ERA last season and was 0-7. Still, some thought he would fill in for the injured Carlos Rodon and possibly break camp as part of the starting rotation.

Covey just didn’t look good last season. Every time he pitched the concern was it would be another loss for the White Sox. However, the team didn’t have many options and did the best they could.

The emergence of Carson Fulmer towards the end of 2017 made Covey expendable. It looks as though Fulmer could hold potentially be counted on to start this upcoming season. It will be interesting to see how he holds up over an entire season. Bottom line, the White Sox have plenty of pitching available in the minors. It just wasn’t worth keeping Covey on the big-league roster.

Covey was a Rule 5 Draft Pick from the Oakland Athletics in 2016. At 26, he’s still young enough to be a late bloomer. But with the talent in the minors, he just wouldn’t factor into the White Sox long-term plans. The fact that he had an ERA over 7.00 was also very alarming.

Pitching was really an area of concern last season. Rick Hahn did a great job cleaning everything up and giving this team a better chance to compete in 2018. Because of that, guys who aren’t performing won’t be on the team. And Covey wasn’t cutting it so Hahn made a move and opened up a spot for someone else to get a chance to prove themselves.
