White Sox: Carson Fulmer’s Solid Outing Against Seattle
After a few poor performances to start his season, Carson Fulmer showed a glimmer of light with an excellent pitching performance last night.
Headed into his fourth start of the season with a horrendous 7.50 ERA, White Sox 2015 first-round draft pick Carson Fulmer had a terrific game against the Seattle Mariners on Monday night.
Fulmer has not had the best start of 2018. In his first three starts, the already mentioned 7.50 ERA was accompanied by nine walks. Six of them from one game against the Tampa Bay Rays in his second start. His last start against the Oakland Athletics, Fulmer failed to make it to the third inning.

Maybe because of his poor performance or the fact that the Sox were down 9-0, or maybe a combination of the two, Fulmer made a relief appearance against the Astros this past Friday. He gave up a run but struck out three in one and a third innings of work.
Coming off that appearance, Fulmer needed a solid game against the Mariners to keep his fading confidence. And he delivered.
In six innings on Monday, his longest outing of 2018, Fulmer gave up two runs on three hits, three strikeouts and a walk. He was able to bring his ERA down 1.5 points as it now sits at 6.00.
It was no coincidence his best outing came when he pitched with a nice five run cushion after the first inning. Obviously if the White Sox are not hitting well, they will lose games. And the reliance on the pitching is not the smartest idea with young arms like Fulmer, Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez making up three-fifths of the rotation. But when these young pitchers receive cushions like Fulmer did on Monday night, they noticeably play better. Fulmer noticeably played better.

Hopefully when the weather in Chicago starts to heat up, so will a couple of bats. Then, as you know, hitting is contagious, so the runs will come rushing in. And when they do, the pitchers will feel comfortable by pitching to hold a lead rather than pitching damage control.
